Wed 8 Oct Astronomy Night @ Highfield Park

Welcome back to a fun packed 2014 last term.

Keep an eye out for the program filled with Astronomy Night, mountain bike camp (email already out), survival/navigation, Gilwerool (mini Jamboree), ice-blocking, air-activities target badge day, Chaddy Challenge, etc..... and the fun continues!!

We start this week with Astronomy Night.

Location - Highfield Park, Camberwell (the oval next to Highfield and Riversdale Road junction)
Start time - 7.15 pm
Pickup - 9.30 pm or just after (Total Eclipse at 9.24 pm!)

As usual, full uniform.

Adam Feldman (Ari's dad) is kind enough to share his passion and knowledge on astronomy with possible sighting of (dependent on weather):

  • Sun Set at 19:30 and Moon Rise about the same time in the opposite part of the sky (good discussion about the alignment of Sun, Earth and Moon creating an eclipse)
  • Lunar Eclipse easily visible from about 20:15. Total eclipse begins at 21:24, so if people can stay around to then, that would be great. The moon will continue getting darker until 21:55 and then reverse – people can go home and watch it from there!
  • Saturn and it’s rings from about 20:20 to 21:00
  • Possibility of a very bright satellite ‘magically appearing’ at the exact time and location predicted!
  • Southern Cross
  • Some double stars, star clusters and nebulae (star forming regions)
Rain is forecasted for the evening. If it rains please go to the scout hall instead.

THANK YOU Adam for your time and sharing.
